Dr. Anil Shah’s Number One Goal When Operating on Patients

Dr. Anil Shah, a New York City plastic surgeon, standing in front of an orange background and wearing a suit.

What exactly is a surgeon’s number one goal when operating on a patient? For Dr. Shah, that top goal is to make the patient happy. Dr. Shah achieves this goal by speaking with patients, getting to know them and their personality, learning their aesthetic and surgical goals, and using a personalized approach to surgery. He applies this same strategy for all procedures, including rhinoplasty, facelift, and neck lift.

Dr. Shah:

When someone comes in I say “What are my goals when someone's coming in?” And my ultimate goal when I see someone is to make them happy. At the end of the day, I want to make that person come in and I want to find out what makes this person happy. And that person may not know what makes them happy. And I kind of have to like, kind of articulate that out. and so I have to kind of figure this out. So I'll talk to someone, I'll find out where they're from. What are they doing? Are they married? Are they single? Are they divorced? and what's going on in their life? And someone who comes in, who is 65 and has a bunch of grandkids and has been married for 25 years, might have different concerns than someone who is 16 and may have trouble in school and relating to other people, not feeling confident.

So for me, it's kind of finding out what that person wants and what is their M.O., what is their modus operandi for me to make them happy. And that's the part where sometimes when they come in, I'll talk about something random. And when I'm talking about something random, I definitely want to get to know them, but I'm also trying to get to know them beyond just the face, beyond just what they do. It’s who they are, and, when I'm fortunate enough for someone to share with me all the insights of who they are and they've shared their story, I feel like I can provide a better result to kind of match up with what they're missing. Why they're in my office for the first time in the first place, and kind of create that image, that kind that is hopefully going to balance them and ultimately is to make them happy.
