Otoplasty - 2 Weeks Pre Op

In preparation of your upcoming surgery in 2 weeks, please review the following instructions carefully.

Here is also a video link you can refer to: Pre-Op Instructions- Two Weeks Prior to Procedure.

  • Stop all blood thinner medications (see full list below).

This includes all medications and over the counter supplements. Common blood thinners include: Advil, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Fish Oil, Ginseng, Glucosamine.
Call the office if you have any questions about a medication you are taking.

  • Ideally, stop all tobacco use. Smoking can increase your chance of complications during     surgery. This includes: higher risk of infection, high risk of blood supply issues, can     compromise anesthesia, and can dramtically delay your healing process.

  • Please make sure you arrange a ride for after your procedure. You will be receiving medications prior to your procedure, and you will not be allowed to drive yourself home that day.

  • In one week, you do need to begin avoiding alcohol

* Below is a list of materials you'll want to gather before the procedure:
- Cold compress
- Q-tips
- Bacitracin ointment
- Hydrogen Peroxide

Otoplasty - 2 Days Pre Op

Your surgery is just 2 days away! Below are a few more reminders and a video link reminder to help you further prepare.

  • Continue to avoid blood thinner medications, herbal supplements, and alcohol.

  • Start avoiding caffeine today until 2 days after your surgery.

  • Please be aware of your check-in time for your procedure. You will need 1 hour prior to the procedure to get relaxed.  Feel free to bring headphones or a book to enjoy while you are relaxing.

  • Make sure your ride is arranged with a family member or friend. Remember you won't be able to drive yourself after the procedure.

  • Please eat breakfast or lunch on the day of your surgery. You will be receiving medications and it is better to have food in your stomach to avoid nausea.

  • Don't forget to have your ice ready for your recovery.

  • You will need to sleep elevated after the procedure (use at least 2 pillows) to help reduce swelling.

Otoplasty - 1 Day Post Op

Here are some post op reminders for your recovery. Please also refer to the end of this video for instructions from Dr. Shah.

  • It is important to rest and ice your ears as much as possible for the next 3 days. Apply the cold compress to your ears, icing 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off to prevent and/or treat bruising and swelling.

  • Sleep elevated so that your head is above your heart for the next 5-6 days. This will help minimize swelling.

  • Avoid caffeine for one more day.

  • Avoid alcohol for the next week.

  • Avoid blood thinners for two more weeks.

  • Take the pain medication as needed. Try to switch to Tylenol Extra Strength if you are experiencing only mild pain.

  • Your stitches should be cleaned using a 1:1 ratio of warm water and hydrogen peroxide 2-4 times per day. Then apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment.

  • Do not wash your hair today. You can wash your hair starting tomorrow.

  • Continue to wear the headband provided, or a comparable one, as much as possible for the first week and then only at bedtime for the next 5-6 weeks.
